England put in their best performance of Euro 2024 in Wednesday's semi-final win over the Netherlands but they could again be faced with heartbreak in Sunday's final against Spain in Berlin.
The Three Lions lost to Italy on penalties in the final of Euro 2020 but have another bite at the cherry on Sunday after their 2-1 triumph over the Dutch in Dortmund.
Xavi Simons had broken the deadlock with a stunning strike after seven minutes but a first-half penalty scored by Harry Kane and a last-gasp strike from Ollie Watkins turned things around for the ante-post favourites.
There are still question marks around Gareth Southgate's side but England showed more attacking impetus against the Netherlands, especially in the first half as Kobbie Mainoo and Phil Foden looked dangerous going forward.
Kieran Trippier was largely ineffective on the left-hand side and could make way for Luke Shaw in the final but Southgate is expected to stick with a 3-4-2-1 formation on Sunday.
The England manager has gone some way to silencing his critics with a run to the final and winners of major tournaments can often start slowly.
But there is no getting away from the fact England are yet to beat a top side at Euro 2024 and they have had to come from behind in all three of their knockout contests against Slovakia, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
Indeed, they left it late to respond in those matches, scoring 95th-minute and 80th-minute equalisers against Slovakia and Switzerland before Watkins's 90th-minute goal against the Dutch.
And there will be far less margin for error against Spain in the final.
La Roja have clearly been the best team at Euro 2024, scoring 13 goals and conceding just three times.
The 2-1 win over 2022 World Cup runners-up France in the semi-finals was particularly eyecatching given the defensive resolve and game-management abilities of Les Bleus.
Both goals from Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo were moments of real quality and Spain had taken the lead after 25 minutes despite trailing 1-0 after just nine minutes.
But it was just the second time they have fallen behind in the tournament and they will be even stronger for the final with defenders Robin Le Normand and Dani Carvajal returning from suspension.
Pedri's absence in midfield is a blow but his replacement Olmo has been one of the players of the tournament.
Spain's ruthless, direct approach under Luis de la Fuente has reaped rewards and they are unlikely to relent against England, who will be making a mistake if they sit back and invite pressure the way they have done in previous matches in this tournament.
Spain may not get the job done in 90 minutes, though, and while they look a good bet to win the tournament, a 1-1 draw appeals in the correct score market.
Both teams scored in both semi-finals at Euro 2024 and England drew 1-1 in normal time against Slovakia and Switzerland.
Given England's habit of going behind in the knockout stage, Spain's players catch the eye in the first goalscorer market and Olmo looks a lively candidate.
The Leipzig midfielder has struck three goals at this tournament, including the opener in a tense quarter-final clash with hosts Germany.
He has had six attempts on target in his five appearances and could find a way past Jordan Pickford.
